How to do the stem stitch in hand embroidery?

The stem stitch is my favorite stitch for creating even outlines, reminiscent of pencil strokes. As its name suggests, it’s very useful for creating flower stems, but not only that. Many outlines of characters in my embroidery patterns use this stitch! With a bit of practice, you’ll be able to make your stitches more uniform and straight.
